A total of 4,000 New York City high school students are now studying Hebrew as part of their regular courses of study, the annual report of the Hebrew Culture Council revealed today. The Council, an affiliate of the Jewish Education Committee of this city, said that the figure represents an increase of 21 percent over last year.
Hebrew is now taught in 19 senior, five junior and two evening high schools, report said. Thirty-seven licensed teachers are now conducting 137 classes. The report also disclosed that more than 600 American universities, colleges and professional schools now extend full accreditation for Hebrew.
