Seventy-three junior and senior high school students in the New York City schools received prizes at ceremonies held in the Main Hall of the Board of Education. They were winners of a city-wide Hebrew language contest sponsored by the Hebrew Culture Council of the Jewish Education Committee of New York and the Hebrew Division of Hunter College, in cooperation with the Junior and Senior High School Divisions of the Board of Education. The Free Sons of Israel, a national fraternal order, provided the awards.
Charles H. Silver, president of the Board of Education, expressed the pride of the Board in the fact that the pioneering efforts of New York City in instituting Hebrew language courses into the classrooms have served as a model for more than 15 other cities. He stated, “This acceptance by our educators of the study of Hebrew as a living language is a profound tribute to the eternal traditions of Israel. It is also a symbol of appreciation for the precious heritage of Hebrew culture which has enriched American democracy and entwined itself into our cherished way of life.”
Dr. Jacob Greenberg, Deputy Superintendent of Schools, presided and spoke on the good influence which the teaching of Hebrew as a modern language study has had on the school population.
