The Washington Board of Rabbis, representing many of the Reform, Conservative and Orthodox rabbis In this area, have appealed to their congregants to boycott non-union iceberg lettuce In support of the organizing drive of the United Farm Workers Union. In a statement circulated to their congregations, the board urged support of the boycott until “the growers meet their workers and sign fair contracts.” The union, under the leadership of Caesar Chavez, has charged that the large lettuce farm owners have refused to sign contracts with the migrant laborers. Other Jewish and Catholic organizations have similarly urged boycotts.
