Notwithstanding the very considerable increase in the population of Palestine since 1924, the number of licenses for the sale of alcoholic liquors has not been proportionately increased, Colonel Leopold Amery, British Colonial Secretary, declated in the House of Commons.
The secretary replied to the question of the Rev. James Barr, Laborite, as to what was the precise increase in the number of places selling alcoholic Equors in Palestine. Col. Amery stated that in 1922, 363 licenses had been issued; 493 in 1923; 513 in 1924; 846 in 1925; 861 in 1926 and 541 in 1927. No action in this direction has been considered necessary, the secretary stated.
