It is reported from Germany that President von Hindenburg has recently become alarmed by the development of events which have isolated Germany and alienated her former friends. He has suddenly realized that Hitler is jeopardizing the very existence of Germany by his blunderings. The old soldier is said to be determined to demand drastic changes of policy. And von Papen’s attack on the present regime may be the beginning of Hindenburg’s campaign to oust Hitler.
The growing economic catastrophe, the shortage of raw materials, the financial and moral bankruptcy of Germany, the dissatisfaction and disillusionment among the deluded masses, the rising tide of discontent among the Junkers—all these point to the handwriting on the wall.
It was this crisis that caused Hitler to seek the conference with Mussolini, and, according to all indications, he returned from Venice empty-handed. He may have received sensible advice from the Italian dictator, in return for which he had to abandon his Nazi designs on Austria.
The Hitler machine is breaking down. The end may come sooner than the most optimistic observers expected.
