WEPOINTED out here a few days ago that the policy of the Dollfuss Government to ward off Hitlerism by its own brand of Nazism is suicidal. The latest events in Austria substantiate this view. Chancellor Dollfuss, relying on the Heimwehr and his other Fascist supporters, is practically paving the way for the Nazi triumph in Austria.

The New York Times correspondent, Frederick T. Birchall, cahling from Vienna writ s that the only difference between the Hitler and Starhemberg doctrines are those of degree and personality, that while anti-Semitism has not yet reared its ugly head in Heimwehr action, it surely will, and then the sole divergences will be those of efficiency and personality.

The outrageous attack by the Government troops op peaceful workers, on women and chilren, many of whom were killed, is sure to intensify bitterness and strife in Austria and to create a situation which will hasten the coming of Hitlerism.

“Why the Socialists were made objects of this attack is still a mystery, because the futile call for a general strike came only after resistance to the search for arms at Linz had resulted in bloodshed,” writes Mr. Birchall. “It was not the Socialists but the Nazis who were exploding bombs all over Austria, propagandizing against the Government and striving to upset the regime of Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss. The Socialists were striving to induce the Chancellor to enlist them in his defense of Austria.”

Little Dollfuss has chosen the reactionary anti-Semitic Heimwehr Fascists to lean on. The weakness of Austria was its strength. Dollfuss had gained the sympathy of other nations because of his courageous efforts to resist the German Nazis. By resorting now to cowardly methods that are as despicable as those of the Hitlerite Nazis, Dollfuss is practically making ready to hand Austria over to Hitler. The Fascism of the Dollfuss supporters resembles more closely the Nazism of Hitler than the Fascism of Mussolini.

At this time, when Palestine is economically prosperous, it comes as a shock that the teachers and students of a recognized and valuable institution of Jewish learning should have to appeal to world Jewry on the ground tht they are on the point of starvation. It would seem that a matter of this sort should be handled promptly and discreetly by the leading representatives of the Jewish community of Jerusalem in order to prevent this disagreeable publicity. Other ways should and cuold be found to help this worthy institution.
