Testimony in the case of Xavier Vallat, first Commissioner for Jewish Affairs in the Vichy Government, was completed today before the ##gh Court which is hearing charges that he was responsible for the deportation and ?ath of many French Jews through the introduction of discriminatory anti-Jewish Legislation. A verdict is expected either late today or tomorrow.
Yesterday, the court conducted a ten-minute trial of Louis Darquier de Pellepoix, Vallat’s successor in the office, who issued orders for the deportations and who fled to Madrid after the liberation. It is expected that Pellepoix will be condemned to death but that Vallat will escape with a milder sentence.
