Officials in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius authorized emergency funds to save ailing cherry trees planted in honor of a Japanese diplomat who saved thousands of Jews during the Holocaust. The 100 cherry trees, planted one year ago to mark the 100th anniversary of Chiune Sugihara’s birth, haven’t received enough water and may soon die. The trees suffered after temperatures in Lithuania topped 95 degrees last month.
