An Israel Defense Force unit killed one Arab and wounded at least three Wednesday during riots in Shuyukh village, near Halhoul in the Hebron area. Some reports said six were wounded.
The dead man was identified as Ismail Hussein Muhammad Halaykah, 19. According to military sources, the soldiers went to the village to take down a roadblock and were attacked by about 150 local youths throwing stones. The troops opened fire when they perceived their lives to be in danger, the sources said.
Although the soldiers were said to have fired into the air, a doctor at the Arab Mokassed hospital in East Jerusalem said Halaykah died from a bullet in his lung.
Israeli troops have been instructed to use rubber bullets and other non-lethal devices to control rioting in the administered territories. But the army has maintained that soldiers have the right to use live ammunition if they perceive their lives to be in danger.
Elsewhere the West Bank was quiet Wednesday. The IDF reported disturbances but no casualties in Gaza, where youths threw stones at a military patrol.
