The steamer sailed from the Polish port, Gdynia, the newly constructed harbor near Danzing. One hundred and fifty of the 600 emigrants were Jews en route to Buenos Aires.
The opening of the line was accompanied by festive exercises in which farewell to the passengers was a prominent feature. Abraham Podlishewski, president of the Jewish Emigrant Aid Society, delivered an address in Hebrew and Yiddish.
