A national conference of fund-raising leaders of Jewish communities who support the opposition within the United Palestine Appeal will be held in Atlantic City on Dec. 11 and 12, it was announced here today by the newly-formed “Committee of Contributors and Workers.”
The new group, which advocates the launching of a drive for Israel separate from the United Palestine Appeal, has advised the Jewish Agency in Jerusalem of the convocation of the national conference. It informed the Agency that “prompt action will be taken to provide immediate funds for the expanded immigration, resettlement, up building and reconstruction program contemplated for 1949.”
A statement issued by Abraham Feinberg, chairman of the new group, said that the decision to call this conference was made at a meeting of the executive committee of the Committee of Contributors and Workers “in view of the nationwide concern over the critical financial burdens today facing the state of Israel.” He outlined the objectives of his group as follows:
“1. All American Jews shall share in the responsibility for raising funds for Israel in 1949; 2. All Funds raised in the United States for Israel shall, be remitted directly to Israel; 3. Final authority for allocations and disbursements of funds remitted to Israel from the Jews of America shall rest with the executive of the Jewish Agency in Israel.”
The Committee of Contributors and Workers also made public today a temporary slate of officers which includes, in addition to Mr. Feinberg–who is an associate chairman of the U.J.A. of Greater New York–Joseph Shulman, Paterson, N.J., national chairman of the textile division of the U.J.A., secretary Fred Monessen, Boston, national chairman of the U.J.A. rainwear division, treasurer; and a long list of member of the executive committee.
