More than a hundred Jews, including Pierre Masse, former Minister of Justice, were arrested in Paris today by the Nazis and will be held as hostages in reprisal for the renewed outbreak of anti-Nazi activities there, which were climaxed today by attacks on two German soldiers, it is reported from Paris.
Masse was Minister of Justice in the Poincare cabinet in 1922 and is well known as a brilliant trial lawyer. A non-Jewish lawyer, Theodore Valensi, a former Deputy, was also seised.
Admitting that “street incidents are multiplying and that the situation was extremely grave, Vichy authorities alleged that the arrests followed a series of demonstrations in the Jewish neighborhoods of Paris on August 16 and 17.
