Over one million dollars a month is the record of the United Jewish Campaign since September, according to results reported to national headquarters during September, October and November, as has been the case since the local drives began a year ago. The exact total of new subscriptions for the three Fall months is $3,449,000, making the campaign total, as of December 1st, $18,849,000, a statement from the national headquarters of the campaign declared.
“This remarkable record is a great tribute to American Jewry,” declared David A. Brown. “It proves what I have always contended, that if you go to the Jews of this country with an appeal that is right, with a cause that is worthy, the response is certain, the response is bound to be adequate to the fullest measure.
“And this is a cause that is worthy. Nay, more it is a holy cause, and the Jews of America and Canada are responding to it in a manner that is unprecedented in our history.
“It is fitting that I should repeat what I had occasion to write last January when, from a number of sources a warning came to me that the Jews of America are tired of giving, tired of asking, I then said:
” ‘There are no more generous people in this country than our people. Not only have they given vast sums for European relief, millions for local charity and more millions for hospitals, Y. M. H. A.’s, synagogues, temples, and other Jewish institutions, but they have given enormous sums for non-Jewish institutions of learning, music and art.
” ‘In addition, they have played their part with all other citizens of this country in meeting the demands for general charity and other social needs in the cities in which they live.
” ‘Tired of asking? Since when have the Jews become tired of service to their people or any other people? For to ask is to serve in some human cause. Service is part of the religion of the Jews. No Jew is a Jew unless he serves mankind. Tired of asking? Never-as long as there is suffering. Never-as long as there is need for human service. Never-as long as there is love in our hearts for those less fortunate!'”
The dedication ceremonies of B’rith Sholom Community, Bethlehem, Pa., Center began on December 1, and will continue throughout the week, ending on Sunday evening with a banquet. Dr. Cyrus Adler, president of Dropsie College, Philadelphia, and president of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, and Judges Stern and Lewis, of Philadelphia, will be present. The Center, which was crected at a cost of $225,000, has an auditorium, stage, dining room, classrooms, a gymnasium and swimming pool.
The B’nai Israel congregation of Jacksonville, Fla., has pledged $50,000 toward the $250,000 fund needed for the construction of the new Jewish community center.
The pledge was made during the 25th annual banquet at which plans for the new structure, which will include a recreation hall, place of worship and school, were submitted. Ground will be broken, it was announced, on the site within a month. The new temple, according to Rabbi Benjamin, will be ready for the New Year services next September.
