The principle of one united Jewish community i every Palestinian town, long contested, is laid down in the Palestin Communities Ordinance promulgated today by the Palestine government.
The ordinance provides for the creation of only one Jewish community in each place, but allow the formation of autonomous congregations with their own schechita supervision and their separat cemetery within the community The ordinance also permits the secession of individual groups from the community.
The issue was contested by the Ultra-Orthodox group in Jerusalem under the leadership of the Agudath Israel. This group has been very active in this direction, having submited complaints and demands to the various bodies and to the Permanent Mandates Commission of the League of Nations. At its last session, the Commission decided to reserve judgment until the Communities Ordinance is put into effect and is tried by experience.
