Raising the hand in the Nazi salute and pledging loyalty to Germany was a feature of the Hindenburg memorial service at Sarona, German Templars’ colony near Jaffa, according to an Arab source. The entire congregation, come to mourn the late Field-Marshal, swore an oath of fealty to the Reich.
It is said that in accordance with old German custom a grave was dug in the Sarona cemetery around which the congregation stood while the president of the community eulogized the dead Marshal.
According to reports, the German Christian community of Palestine has long shown sympathy with Nazi ideas because of its dislike of the Jews. The German Christians here are on extremely good terms with the Arabs.
