“The very existence of Palestine is a comfort and encouragement to millions of Jews who themselves know they will never be able to live there.” said Dr. Judah L. Magnes, Chancellor of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, on disembarking at Boston from Palestine today on his first trip to this country since 1931. “Unfortunately, Palestine is a small country, and Jews will be found scattered throughout the whole world always. My own theory of Jewish life provides for a place for the dispersed communities of Israel in the life of the nation.
“We have in Palestine an unparalleled historic opportunity to create a center for this scattered organism known as the Jewish people. Above all things we must endeavor to provide a home and a workshop for the Jewish tradition, Jewish learning and creative activities of the Jewish intellect.
GET MANY APPLICATIONS
Dr. Magnes commented on the fact that hundreds of applications had been received during the past year from exiled German scholars and scientists who hoped to be accommodated on the faculty of the Hebrew University.
Dr. Magnes, who is accompanied by Dr. Max Schloessinger, Vice-Chancellor of the Hebrew University, will arrive in New York Wednesday. They are coming to this country primarily for the purpose of engaging in a series of conferences with the American members of the Board of Governors of the Hebrew University, which will begin on May 12 and last through May 14.
GUEST AT DINNER
Dr. Magnes will be guest of honor at a dinner tendered him by the Boston chapter of the American Friends of the Hebrew University tonight. More than one hundred communal leaders have responded to the invitation of Dr. Milton J. Rosenau, president of the chapter. Dr. Magnes will be entertained at luncheon tomorrow by Harvard academic men and others at the home of Professor Robert Blake, director of the Harvard Library. His only public appearance in Boston will be at a mass meeting of the United Jewish Appeal tomorrow night, at which he will be the guest speaker.
Felix M. Warburg will be honorary chairman and Roger W. Straus chairman of the reception to be tendered Dr. Magnes at his only public appearance in New York City on May 15 by the American Friends of the Hebrew University.
