The question of flogging in Palestine jails came up in Commons yesterday when Col. Josiah Wedgwood urged that flogging be inflicted on prisoners for only such offences as are punishable by flogging in English jails.

Major Ormsby Gore, Under Secretary for the Colonies, promised to consult the Palestine High Commissioner on this point.

Col. Wedgwood asked whether the extraordinary attitude toward Communists in Palestine is due to the policy of the Colonial Office or to the Palestine government’s obscurantism. The Under Secretary replied that it was due to special circumstances in Palestine.
