Numerous indications gave ground to fear that today Dov Gruner, condemned Palestine Jewish youth, may be executed tomorrow at dawn. ?e and three other condemned Irgunists were today transferred from the central prison ?n Jerusalem to the jail at Acre.
Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog today applied for an interview with High Commissioner Sir Alan Cunningham in an attempt to establish the fate of Gruner, but his request ?as denied by Chief Secretary Gurney. Later, he submitted a petition to the High Commissioner and to Lt. Gen. Gordon H.A. MacMillan, Palestine military commander, asking postponement of Gruner’s execution. Similar petitions were also submitted by Mayor Israel Rokach of Tel Aviv and Max Seligman, Gruner’s lawyer. The Chief Secretary, in accepting the petitions, said that the matter was in the hands of Gen. MacMillan.
On the other hand, Seligman disclosed late tonight that he had received word from Acre Prison that the superintendent had received no new orders concerning Gruner and does not expect that Gruner will be hanged tomorrow, particularly in the light of the news that a new appeal has been filed with the Privy Council in London.
