Armistice Day was celebrated throughout Palestine today.
At eleven o’clock a gun salute announced the observance of a two-minutes silence. A large parade, in which Jewish ex-soldiers participated, took place at Russian Square.
At noon, High Commissioner Plumer reviewed the parade. In an address he delivered, Lord Plumer stated that Armistice Day should remind the population of the heroes who fell during the war. The best way to commemorate their sacrifice is to work everywhere for “our land and our people.” The speech of the High Commissioner was translated into Hebrew.
A procession went to the military cemetery where wreaths were laid on the graves in behalf of the Zionist Executive, the Tel Aviv municipality, the Jewish communities of Palestine, the League of Zionist Revisionists and others. Solemn mourning services were held in the Anglican Church and in the synagogues. The government offices were closed all day. The Union Jack decorated the buildings.
