Palestinian militia leader Marwan Barghouti will not be released from jail despite Yasser Arafat’s death, a top Israeli official said. Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom made the comment Thursday amid speculation that Israel would release Barghouti as a goodwill gesture to the new Palestinian leadership. “Barghouti was sentenced to life and he will be in prison for the rest of his life. He is a murderer who is responsible for murdering many Israelis,” Shalom said, according to the Jerusalem Post.
