Palestinians shelled an army base in southern Israel, wounding dozens of soldiers.

A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip hit Zikim training base early Tuesday, wounding between 30 and 60 soldiers. Doctors said most of the casualties suffered light shrapnel wounds, though at least one was in critical condition.

Two Palestinian terrorist groups, Islamic Jihad and the Popular Resistance Committees, separately claimed responsibility for the predawn salvo.

Right-wing opposition politicians in Israel called for the Olmert government to order a military ground sweep against Palestinian rocket crews in northern Gaza.
