In response to the appeal of the American Christian Fund for Jewish Relief, the Rev. Charles E. Jefferson prefaced his sermon on Sunday with a plea to the members of the Broadway Tabernacle, New York, of which he is pastor, to give generously to the United States Jewish Campaign for reconstruction and relief in Eastern Europe.
“Several million Jews in Eastern Europe are in desperate need,” said Dr. Jefferson. “They are hungry, and winter is at hand. They are in this pitiable predicament through no fault of their own. They are where they are through the operation of forces over which they have no control.
“It is their misfortune to live in the most bedeviled sections of Europe They are in sore distress and their need cries trumpet-tongued for relief. The American Jews have been helping them since immediately after the war and have contributed $60,000,000 and are at the present time driving for $25,000,000 throughout the United States. But there is so great need that even the resources and generosity of the American Jews are not sufficient to cope with the situation. We Christians must come to their assistance.”
