Seven hundred civic and business leaders last night paid tribute to Pennsylvania’s Governor Raymond P. Shafer at a dinner here under the auspices of the Israel Histadrut campaign. Proceeds of the event were earmarked for the establishment of a Histadrut cultural and youth center at Ramle, in the name of the governor, who recalled his visit to Israel last year and expressed hope that there would be “a reconciliation between Jews and Arabs in the Middle East.”
Governor Shafer lauded the role of Histadrut, especially its educational program among Israeli youth, “whose dedication to the future of their country also gives us more faith in the durability of Israel. We can be proud of the vitality of this youth committed to the building of a free nation,” he declared.
Speakers at the dinner included Ambassador Arieh Eilan, of the Israel Mission to the United Nations; and Dr. Sol Stein, national director of the Israel Histadrut Campaign. William H. Sylk, national chairman of the American Histadrut Development Foundation, presented a silver-bound Jerusalem Bible to the guest of honor. Samuel Weinrott was toastmaster.
