The People’s Hospital, a Jewish institution of which representative William I. Sirovich is the superintendent, is planning to take over the St. Mark’s Hospital, a non-Jewish institution which last week closed its doors for lack of funds, and operate it as an open hospital with free service to the poor.
Representative Sirovich stated that the People’s Hospital had offered to take over the mortgages and obligations of St. Mark’s, which, he said, amount to $900,000, and pay $400,000 besides. He declared that the People’s Hospital, which has been taking care of the poor for twenty-two years, wishes to purchase St. Mark’s because it needs more space.
Two other hospitals have made bids for the purchase of St. Mark’s. They are the Beth Israel Hospital and the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. These two hospitals, together with the People’s, are located on Second Avenue in the neighborhood of St. Mark’s.
