The permanent exhibition of the seven Dead Sea Scrolls in the possession of the State of Israel, temporarily housed in a huge vault in the basement of the administration building of the Hebrew University, was opened yesterday by Prof. Yigal Yadin, Israel’s leading archaeologist and former chief of staff of the Israel Army. The scrolls, set in illuminated, air-conditioned glass cases are guarded by an armed usher.
At the opening of the exhibition was A. Bartos, an American architect and son-in-law of the late Samuel D. Gottesman, who provided most of the funds with which four of the scrolls were purchased Mr. Bartos has been discussing with Hebrew University authorities further assistance from the Gottesman family for the erection of a building to be known as “The Shrine of the Book” where the scrolls will be kept and where research facilities will be provided.
