A special decree providing severe punishment for persons obstructing the enforcement of the regulations for the “Rumanization” of Jewish property has been issued by the Antonescu government, the Donau Zeiturg reaching here today reports. At the same time, Nicolae Stoinescu, the Rumanian Minister of Finance, admitting that Rumania had had grave financial difficulties during the past fiscal year, attributed part of the trouble to the elimination of Jews from the economic life of the country.
The new decree provides that every transaction concerning Jewish property consummated since Sept. 6, 1940 must be reported to the authorities. If investigation discloses that the transaction was purely a nominal one which was entered into to thwart the “Rumanization” regulations, the business or property involved will be confiscated and the transaction will be considered an act of sabotage. Persons found guilty of such “sabotage” will be punished by sentences of five to fifteen years in prison, the Donau Zeitung states.
