A Philadelphia bank announced yesterday it would stop paying Jewish employees for Jewish holidays in line with a Federal government ruling against “discrimination in reverse.” Non-Jewish employees are not paid for such holidays.
Townsend Nunson, president of the Western Savings Fund Society, announced the new policy after the bank was informed of a ruling by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, calling on employers to prevent “discrimination in reverse.” He said he understood most large banks in the city would follow the policy. He did not know how many of the bank’s 400 employes would be affected.
