Approximately 120 pickets representing the Jewish community of Philadelphia today demonstrated in front of the Soviet Embassy in protest against “religious and cultural genocide” affecting Soviet Jewry.
Leaders of the group met with officials of the Soviet Embassy to present a petition calling on the Soviet Government to end anti-Jewish discriminations. They also asked Moscow “to permit Jews to make religious pilgrimages to the holy places in Israel, and permit free emigration for those who wish to leave the USSR.” The group also met with members of the Pennsylvania Congressional delegation.
Leaders of the group included Stanton W. Kratzok, chairman of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Philadelphia commission on anti-Semitism; Rabbi Theodore Gordon, vice-president of the Philadelphia JCRC; Jules Cohen, director of the Philadelphia JCRC; the Rev. Henry Nichols, past president, of the Philadelphia Council of Churches; Rabbi Martin Berkowitz, president of the Board of Rabbis of Philadelphia; Milton Shapp, president of the American Jewish Congress of Delaware Valley Council, and Rabbi Leo Landman, Washington, D. C.
