Alvin Mellman, a student at the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work, today was awarded the first grant under a new national scholarship plan to promote careers in Jewish social work and communal administration. The award was announced by Alan V. Lowenstein of Newark, chairman of the National Scholarship Committee of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds, which is sponsoring the plan.

The National Scholarship program is one of a series of steps undertaken by the Council in recent years to help recruit professional personnel to meet the shortage of trained workers in Jewish community organizations and in health and welfare agencies.
