Preparations have been completed for the establishment of a central organization which would take in all the Jews of Bohemia and Moravia, it was announced today. A conference of Jewish community councils will be held here next month to set up the new group.
Community councils have already been established in fifteen towns in the two provinces, although in some cases the Jewish population hardly exceeds ten persons. Jews have returned to other towns, but many are constantly shifting their residences and the entire situation is still unsettled.
Because many surviving and returning Jews have not yet registered, it is difficult to estimate the exact number of Jews in Bohemia and Moravia today, but it is not believed that there are more than 10,000. Of these, about twenty-five percent are “non-professing” Jews.
