A new police station has been opened in Salonica, built at the expense of the Jewish community, in the interior of the great Jewish cemetery, so that it may be protected against the desecration of tombs and the destruction of tomb-stones, which up to now have been extremely frequent. The director of police, Colonel Calochristianakis has given his moral support to the erection of this station, and the fact is noted by a marble plaque which has been added to the front of the new police station.
Replying to speeches by the acting Grand Rabbinate, Rabbi Haim Habib, and Asher Mallah, the president of the Union of Jewish Communities and the Zionist Federation of Greece, M. Calochristianakis declared that the new police station would, in addition to protecting the Jewish cemetery, also serve as a protection for the inhabitants of the two new Greek quarters which have grown up in the neighborhood of the cemetery. Representatives of these Greek quarters were present at the inauguration ceremony, and spoke of the good relations between Greeks and Jews, asking that a road should be opened through the cemetery between their quarter and the great central road bordering the other side of the cemetery.
