Police teams combed Israel’s post offices today for suspicious-looking letters and parcels that could contain explosives. Two booby-trapped letters were detected in the Jerusalem Post Office this morning, one addressed to Transport Minister Shimon Peres and another to Dr. Moshe Kurtz, director general of the Welfare Ministry.
Both were mailed from Holland, the source of the letter-bomb that yesterday killed Ami Shechori, the Agricultural Attache at the Israeli Embassy in London. Commenting on that outrage last night, Foreign Minister Abba Eban declared that “the shedders of innocent blood, their supporters and those who aid them will get their just desserts.”
Police warned the public today to beware of suspect mail, especially parcels that appear to contain gifts of books or candy. Police said that booby-trapped mail could come from anywhere abroad and may even be posted in Israel itself. Recipients were urged to turn over suspect mail to the authorities at once.
Police teams scoured the main post offices in Tel Aviv and Haifa and were also on the look-out for suspicious-appearing people entering the post offices. Police in Beersheba reported today that a number of suspect-letters were intercepted addressed to local residents. Postal authorities said special security measures were put into effect yesterday in the aftermath of the London mail bomb killing. Customs inspectors were warned today to scrutinize all packages before opening them.
