The Polish Ambassador in Washington, Tytus Filipowicz, has issued a statement on the disturbances in Poland, through the Polish Telegraphic Agency, stating that “complete calm has been restored,” and declaring as follows:
“In connection with the inquiries of American Jewish organizations addressed to the Prime Minister of Poland, to other members of the cabinet and to myself, I am authorized to state that the government of Poland remains determined to prevent and counteract with all firmness any excesses of chauvinistic groups of University students against Jewish citizens.
“Thanks to the energetic measures of government and University authorities as well as to the determined stand taken by the majority of mature public opinion complete calm has been restored.
“It is regrettable that exaggeration on the part of certain organs of the press being reflected abroad in some of the protests and resolutions creates unfounded fears which may only result in hindering normal development of Christian Jewish relations in Poland.
“While during the student riots both Jews and Christians have been injured, the only fatal casualty is a Christian student, Grotkowski.”
