The American Jewish Committee has welcomed the action of the Alianza Popular Party in Spain, calling for the establishment of full diplomatic relations between Spain and Israel. Bertram Gold, AJ Committee executive vice president, in a statement, declared that the establishment of such diplomatic ties would be a “demonstration of the Spanish regime’s desire to move toward greater democracy by normalizing Spanish ties with the one true democracy in the Middle East, Israel.”
Gold added that the creation of these ties “would be consonant with the position of the European Common Market countries that Spain hopes to join, “and expressed the hope that the action of the Alianza Popular would be emulated by other parties and groups in Spain.
The Alianza Popular, one of Spain’s four major political parties, issued its statement in a resolution unanimously adopted at the party’s third national convention, held in Madrid Dec. 14-16. The party is a right-centrist group, chaired by Manuel Farga Iribarne. The resolution was introduced by Jesus Perez Bilboa, chairman of the party in the Basque region, during a discussion of the party’s foreign relations platform.
