Pope John Paul II referred to the Holocaust and the destruction of life during World War II as one of the tragic lessons of this century. But the pope, speaking to thousands of worshipers who gathered at St. Peter’s in Rome for the first Mass of 1999, also noted that this century had seen the passage of the U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
