The opening session of the Council of the League of Nations has been postponed from September 5 to September 8 or 10. The date of publication of the report of the Permanent Mandates Commission on Palestine is now indefinite, confirming information given yesterday to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency correspondent regarding secret negotiations being conducted behind the scenes less vigorous reply of the British government.
At the same time it is known that the British government is not anxious to throw the Palestine question open to a public discussion because it might weaken the prestige of the British colonial administration. It is officially confirmed that the Mandates Commission’s report, which also contains the British reply, publication of which had been fixed for today, will not be published until next Monday at the earliest.
This substantiates rumors current in certain League of Nations circles that Great Britain is anxious to avoid the publicity and painful discussion of the subject at the forthcoming session of the Council of the League of Nations.
In connection with the rumors that high officials of the League of Nations are now visiting members of the Mandates Commission for negotiations on this matter, it is also learned that the director of the Mandates section of the League of Nations, Dr. Vito Catastini, has made a special visit to Helsingfors to discuss the question with H. J. Procope of Finland, the rapporteur on the Palestine question before the Council, with a view of having public meetings of the League of Nations which open here September 5.
