President Clinton urged Christian evangelical leaders to withdraw support for pending legislation that aims to reduce religious persecution overseas. The Freedom From Religious Persecution Act, which some Jewish groups support, would require the president to impose trade and aid sanctions against repressive regimes — a provision Clinton said would straitjacket the administration’s foreign policy. The measure, approved last month by the House International Relations Committee, is expected to go to the House floor for a vote later this month.
