President Clinton urged Syrian President Hafez Assad to “seize the moment of opportunity” and open peace negotiations with Israel. Clinton told Assad in a letter delivered over the weekend that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak is preparing his people for “painful compromises” and said “this is a moment of opportunity to be taken advantage of.”
