President Francois Mitterrand Tuesday invited a dozen prominent French intellectuals, most of them Jews, to the Elysee Palace for a “frank and honest explanation” of his Administration’s policy in the Mideast. Among those present at the almost two-hour meeting were philosopher Simone de Beauvoir, economist Pierre Nora, editor Jean Daniel and writers Claude Lanzmann, Pierre Vidal Noquet and Alain Finkelraut.
