Charges that discrimination against Jewish applicants is being practiced in a number of private schools in England, particularly in London, were voiced at a public forum here today.

Mrs. Laura Grimond, wife of the Liberal party leader, and a member of the executive of the Women’s Liberal Federation, told the forum that the bias was displayed not against the Jewish pupils who did get in but in the admission policies of the schools. She said that “in some cases there is a tacit quota of 10 per cent.” She added that legislation was not the remedy for such bias. She suggested that enlightenment and education “in the widest sense” was the solution.

Martin Savitt, vice-chairman of the Association of Jewish Veterans, said that Britain was now a multi-racial society and it was the duty and privilege of all citizens to fight racial and religious hatred and discrimination which, he added, “usually starts with Jews and the next victims are the churches and trade unions and finally the whole fabric of democratic society.”
