A colony exclusively devoted to summer residences for cantors and rabbis and as a haven for those members of the calling who have retired or are in adverse circumstances, is to be established at Hightstown, N. J., according to announcement made by Rev. Aaron E. Goldfinger of this city.
Rev. Goldfinger, acting upon the initiative of Rev. Louis Lipitz, president of the Jewish Ministers Cantors Association, has deeded to the association fifteen acres of the thirty-seven acretract comprising the Roosevelt estate which he purchased last May from Kate Shippen Roosevelt and Dorothy Quincy Roosevelt Goer, sister and neice respectively of the late President.
The fifteen acre tract which he deeded and upon which the Chazanim Ministers’ Colony, as it will be known, is to be established, contains a three-story residence erected, eleven years ago at a cost, it is said, of $125,000. It is planned to use this residence, said Rev. Goldfinger, to house cantors and rabbis who find themselves in adverse circumstances or are temporarily free from their duties. This building, it is said, will afford accommodations for 100 persons. The three-story building will be under the joint direction of Cantor Moses Gann. of Newark, and Cantor Zavel Kwartin, of New York.
