Public funerals were held today in Caralbed and Lovosice for Czech Jews murdered during the last days of the Nazi occupation of Bohemia-Moravia. Government officials were present at the services.
The Jews, and many non-Jewish political prisoners, were murdered on roads leading to the Theresienatadt concentration camp, where they were being driven from camps in the areas being liberated by Allied troops. Many of the bodies, buried in common shallow graves, revealed that the prisoners had been tortured and shot in the neck. Only a small number of the corpses could be identified from numbers tattooed on arms or from the remains of marked clothing.
