A troupe of Jewish actors is now, for the first time in many years; giving public performances in Yiddish in theatres and public parks in Moscow the Associated Press reports today from the Soviet capital. The report says that the performances are meeting with approval on the part of the public.
Another press report from Moscow says that for the first time in seven years a Yiddish concert was given this week in the Pushkin Theatre in Moscow by the Jewish singer and monologist Sidi Tal. She is the second Jewish actor permitted so far to give Yiddish performances. The first was Sol Lubimov who has given several Yiddish concerts since the beginning of this month.
The report emphasizes that there are no Yiddish theatres at present in Moscow and that only individual Jewish actors have been given the opportunity to appear with Yiddish programs before the public. The audience at Miss Tal’s performance consisted mostly of middle-aged Jews, many of whom spoke among themselves in Russian, the report says The chairman of the evening greeted the audience with the words “Sholem Aleichem” but delivered his speech in Russian. Most of the recitations by Miss Tal were from Sholem Aleichem’s works.
