The Purim celebration of the Jews’ deliverance from “the destruction with which they were threatened by Haman should ” quicken the faith of the modern Jews and arouse in them a realization of the splendid heritage which is theirs, ” President Roosevelt declared yesterday.
In a letter to William Weiss, president of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, the president said:
“Because the festival is traditionally observed in Jewish homes it makes a strong appeal to the deepest and tenderest emotions of the human heart. I trust that the observance this year may be an event of outstanding joy and happiness to all who participate.”
The letter was read by Congressman Sol Bloom from Washington in a Purim radio program arranged by the Union, the Joint Distribution Committee and the Jubilee Committee of the Independent Order Brith Abraham.
