A brief requesting the Provincial Government of Quebec to amend its anti-discrimination legislation by establishing a Human Rights Code and a Human Rights Commission for the prevention of racial, religious and ethnic discrimination has been submitted here by a delegation that included representatives of the Canadian Jewish Congress.
The brief, in the name of the United Council for Human Rights, suggested that the amendment include one providing that persons suffering discrimination due to race, ethnic identification or religion be compensated for damages. Also requested was a provisic banning publication of discriminatory materials.
Paul Gerin-Lajoie, Minister of Education for Quebec, told the petitioners that improvements could be made in the provincial law against discrimination, and said that the provincial cabinet would study the brief.
