Rabbi Herschel Schacter, president of the Religious Zionist Organization of America, was installed today as chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. He succeeded Dr. Joachim Prinz who served in the post for two years. Rabbi Schacter is rabbi of the Mosholu Jewish Center in the Bronx.
A reception in honor of Dr. Prinz on his retirement as chairman highlighted the installation ceremonies. In a telegram to Dr. Prinz, Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the World Jewish Congress, said, “due to your splendid leadership, the President’s Conference is progressively gaining status as the recognized and representative body of American Jewry in international Jewish affairs.”
The Presidents Conference is composed of the heads of 21 national Jewish organizations with a collective membership of about 4.5 million, and acts as a coordinating body on issues affecting Jews abroad, including Israel.
