A rabbinical delegation has received assurances from Republican legislative leaders that they will clear for a vote a measure to exempt Sabbath-observers from the Sunday blue laws, if they receive such a request from the City Council of New York.

The rabbis were seeking approval of a bill, now bottled up in committee in the Republican-controlled New York State Legislature, which would permit businessmen in New York City who close their operation on Saturday to open it on Sunday. The legislators did not promise approval of the bill, but only to release it from committee if New York City made a formal request for it.
