Several hundred orthodox rabbis will march on Washington next Wednesday, October 6, to urge immediate action by the President and Congress to save the millions of Jewish people trapped in Europe, it was announced today at an extraordinary session of the Emergency Committee to Save the Jewish People of Europe, held at the Hotel Pennsylvania.
The march is a part of a mass petition campaign initiated by the Emergency Committee to Save the Jewish People of Europe through which Americans will ask the President and the Congress of the United States to create a special inter-governmental agency to handle refugee problems with powers to act without delay and on a large scale and also to request the British government to open the doors of Palestine to all the Jews escaping from the death trap of Europe.
The Washington march, it was announced, will include a solemn prayer on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, a meeting with Congressional leaders at the Capital building, and a visit to the White House where the rabbis will present the petition to the President.
The march will be followed by a Week of Compassion to be observed by 6,000 Christian churches throughout the country, it was also announced by the Emergency Committee. A message to the churches signed by Presiding Bishop Henry St. George Tucker of the Protestant Episcopal Church; Resident Bishop Francis J. McConnell of the Methodist Church, and Rev. Henry Solane Coffin, moderator of the Presbyterian Church, asked all the churches to “urge immediate action to alleviate the plight of the Jews” and to set up committees in their congregations to work with the Emergency Committee to Save the Jewish People of Europe.
