Chairman James Eastland of the Senate Judiciary Committee said today that agreement had been reached with Rep. Francis E. Walter, chairman of the House Immigration Subcommittee, on a compromise immigration measure which would permit the immigration of 18, 655 refugees from Communism and persecution–including some Egyptian Jews–as provided in the Kennedy Bill.
Senator Eastland said that Rep. Walter had undertaken to get House approval of the measure this week and the Senator expressed confidence that the Senate would also accept the compromise, with the result that legislation would be forthcoming before the adjournment of Congress.
Previously, both the House Immigration Subcommittee and the Senate Judiciary Committee had reported out a compromise immigration measure which would have provided relief in certain hardship categories but would not have permitted the additional refugee immigration.
Agreement on this extension of the measure which, under Senator John B. Kenneay original bill would have allowed 5, 000 Jewish refugees from Egypt to enter the country was reached at Senate-House conferences yesterday. Senator Eastland said.
