Synagogue attendance reached the highest mark in New York City and in all Jewish communities throughout the country when Yom Kippur was observed on Saturday.
The observance of Yom Kippur caused the closing down of many wholesale and retail establishments.
Tribute to the memory of Oscar Straus was paid by Rabbi Samuel Schulman, of Temple Beth El, in his sermon, “The Jew and America.” In his eulogy of the late philanthropist, who was a member of his congregation, Rabbi Schulman said:
“What the Jew can give to America, when he is both true to his Judaism as a religion and to America as the expression of his nationality, has been admirably exemplified in the distinguished, noble life of Oscar Solomon Straus.”
Lack of religion in everyday life was blamed for the lawlessness and decadence of modern life by several rabbis in their Yom Kippur sermons.
